Writing Curriculum

Here at Brize Norton Primary, we aspire to create a school of authors. We strive to provide a curriculum that is rich and broad in writing experiences, ensuring children experience a wide range of genres as they progress through their schooling. Our writing opportunities stem from exploration of quality texts, poems and video clips. We ignite children’s enthusiasm for the topics through ‘Experience sessions’ to draw them into the chosen text. Our daily lessons are delivered through Plot Points which strengthens children’s confidence with sentence structure and builds towards an independent piece where the organisation of their ideas and cohesion between them is strengthened.
When writing independently, we foster a reflective approach where we consider the reader at every opportunity as well as provide purpose for the intended outcome.

To complement our Literacy lessons, children also receive a daily SpaG lesson with either a focus on spelling or grammar. These lessons feed into the wider curriculum as well as their writing lessons. Handwriting is taught through the Rocket Phonics scheme in the Lower School and continued into the Upper School with focus lessons where required. Not only do we wish for our children to excel in their writing, we want children to feel a sense of pride in how their work is presented.
