History Curriculum

Through our history curriculum, we help pupils to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our intent is to inspire our pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. We aim to equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.

We support the National Curriculum when it states that, ‘History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.’ Through our bespoke curriculum, we intend our children, as historians, to understand their heritage and past and how their current lives are informed by it.
Our children’s learning journey as historians begins in Reception. Through our Early Years curriculum, children are given the opportunities to expand their knowledge and understanding of events, people and changes in the past and develop their investigative and interpretive skills. Children focus on:
Questioning
Observation
Generating thoughts and ideas
Planning
Carrying out investigations
Recording findings
Checking and questioning findings
Presenting explanations.
Through our planning of progression, our Lower School pupils build on their Reception foundations and are taught about the people, events and changes to historical periods that they will study more fully when they are in the Upper School. Our aim is for pupils to have a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history. By the end of their time in the upper school, children are able to identify connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms. Through our bespoke curriculum and delivery of it within a 3 year cycle, our wish is for children to have enquiring minds and for them to question their learning in order for them to gain a deeper, richer and more meaningful understanding of our history.
