At Brize Norton Primary School we want our children to be naturally curious about the world around them. Our new curriculum has been developed stemming from the Reception curriculum to ensure full coverage of the Early Years Foundation Stage and national Curriculum. Where key strands are progressive, we have planned these on a 3 year cycle whereby we revisit the objectives each year through weekly lessons but through a different lense each time to broaden children’s experiences and knowledge. Each long term, we also have a timetabled ‘Science Focus Day’ where classes split into their year groups and have an immersive knowledge day to explore key year group specific topics.
Investigation skills are taught to every year group and the children are given opportunities to apply them through practical and interactive lessons. This ensures the children are able to think scientifically and increases their motivation - both for Science and in making links to learning in other subjects. Wherever possible learning is applied using the outdoor environment, showing the children that Science is all around them in their everyday lives. Scientific skills are also taught each year progressively, celebrated through the BIG Science Event in the Spring and through a continual focus in lessons where appropriate.
