New for 2022 -2023 - For our Modern Foreign Language, French is now being taught to children in our Upper School (Years 4, 5 and 6). We teach from the Jolie Ronde Scheme of work which gives the children a fantastique introduction into the language. Although the scheme is from Years 3 to Year 6, we ensure this 4 year coverage occurs within our 3 year cycle and across our 2 classes through a continual ‘Plan, Do, Review’ cycle each year. Where we plan to progressively build on prior learning.
The intent of our French curriculum at Brize Norton Primary School is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating.
We encourage children’s confidence and we strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language. We actively plan links to develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries, through our protected characteristics, British values and curriculum enrichment opportunities. We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning.
A typical French lesson includes development of pronunciation through learning French phonic sounds. New vocabulary introduced along with appropriate grammar rules which is then applied to conversation or writing skills. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.
